Seely BU19 @ Regionals in Lancaster, CA
Monday started out as a rough day losing to Oregon 2-1. The boy's watched numerous shots clang off the posts and refuse to hit the net. A tough loss but the team played well.
Tuesday shaped up much better as Seely's boys put on a clinic. Beating Nevada 4-0,
the finishing and teamwork was as beautiful as the California sunshine.
Wednesday's game started off with an exciting first half. The ball movement and play
was beautiful on both ends of the ball. Arizona went in at the half with a 1-0 lead and
that goal would prove to be all they needed. The second half was less than exciting as Arizona bunkered in for the counter-attack. Seely's keeper made some amazing 1v1
saves to keep them in game, but Arizona was too quality of a team and it proved hard to
beat their defensive posture.
Friday ended the boy's amazing run through Regionals. New Mexico played an excellent counter-attacking game and their forwards we excellent finishers. New Mexico went up 1-0 early with a
beautiful 1v1 finish. Seely's team answered back immediately tying the game only to go down
again through another great 1v1 finish. Towards the end of the game Seely's boys pushed forward
in an attempt to apply pressure, but New Mexico was up to the task. They bunkered in 9 defenders
and sent two forwards in for the counter. The forwards combined to put two more goals in, ending
RC's tournament run.
On a personal note
It was great to see our boy's compete at the level they did. I have been involved with Regionals for a few years now at the administrative level, and am always amazed by the level of play. I struggle with Eastern
Washington usually getting the short end of the stick with Washington soccer, and that struggle is more
along the lines that I feel sorry that EW teams don't get to experience the highest levels of play youth soccer
can offer. To sit on the sideline and watch our boy's experience that level of play made me feel great.
Few would have imagined a River City team in the quarterfinals of Regional Championships, but I am
proud to say I was there. Each year I see Region coaches and administrators and make the usual small
talk we do every time. To be able to say "I have a team in the tournament" made me proud. I appreciate
the effort and time the boy's (and Tim) put into the tournament and soccer in general. I can generalize and
say that all at River City are proud of the team’s accomplishment. I can specifically say that it is a pleasure
to have quality players and people like you to be a part of our club and wish you all the best in your
future soccer experiences. ~ Brandon Schreiner (RCSC President)

EV’s Mastronardi master of midfield

EV’s Andrew Mastronardi, left, is headed to Oregon State.

There is nothing middling about Greater Spokane League soccer midfielders. The league was blessed in abundance with exceptional talent at the position this year.
One, East Valley’s Andrew Mastronardi, has signed with Oregon State, although he’ll likely play forward.
He’s making his fourth straight 3A regional appearance today with the Knights, including three as a starter, when the GSL’s 3A top seed hosts a regional match against Sunnyside at 5 p.m. at Albi Stadium.
Joining EV in region is Mt. Spokane, the GSL’s fourth seed and 2-0 upset winner over North Central in the first round. The Wildcats travel to West Valley-Yakima, also at 5.
The Beavers showed interest and offered Mastronardi a scholarship after watching him play twice, including at the Surf Cup in San Diego, where he scored three times in a match for the River City Steelers.
“They said they liked how I played and that I scored goals,” Mastronardi said.
His game was honed on Knights teams that won the final two of three straight GSL titles and made a state appearance, reaching the quarterfinals in 2007.
“All those guys on the team were just awesome,” said Mastronardi, who was then a sophomore. “They made me work twice as hard to play. I developed a good work ethic, because I was trying to earn a spot on the field.”
He was All-GSL last year and it has carried over into this, his final season. First-year coach Jeff Paulus said that Mastronardi and fellow senior Matt Eatock are the heart and soul of EV’s fifth straight regional qualifier.
“Andrew’s a coach’s dream,” Paulus said. “He works harder than all the guys at practice and in the games. He dominates the field wherever he’s at. I’m biased, but I think he’s the best center midfielder in league.”
That’s saying something considering three others, Casey Ames of league champion and 4A regional qualifier Lewis and Clark, and Ferris stars James Matern and Ian Hartfield, have signed to play with Gonzaga University. Junior Nick Hamer of regional qualifier Mead and University’s Mikey Ramos are also returning All-GSL players.
Most are members of the River City team that last year reached the national finals in Virginia.

River City Steelers U13B –Seely advance to Semi-Finals in State Cup Play!
Tim Seely’s River City U13 Boys team has advanced to the Washington State Cup Semi-Finals after a beating FC Vancouver in a nail-biter in Camas this past weekend. The U13 Boys scored the only goal in the game mid-way through the first half on a give and go opportunity that left Trevan Estrellado one on one with the FC Vancouver keeper. The score remained 1 – 0 at the final whistle. Next game for the Steelers will be May 2nd at the Starfire complex against perennial State Cup finalist Washington Premier. Good luck Steelers!
